Written after the end of World War II in 1953, Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 revolutionized literature with a text that condemns not only the Nazi anti-intellectual oppression, but mainly the scenario of the 1950s, revealing its apprehension in an oppressive society commanded by the authoritarianism of the post-war world. Now, Bradbury's title, who recently passed away on June 6, 2012, has a new edition published by Biblioteca Azul, Globo Livros' high literature and classic imprint, and an update to the new orthography.
The singularity of Bradbury's work, when compared to other dystopias like Aldous Huxley's Brave New World or George Orwell's 1984, is to perceive a much more subtle form of totalitarianism, one that is not solely linked to the regimes that took over Europe in the mid-last century. It is about "the culture industry, the consumer society and its ethical corollary - the morality of common sense," according to the words of journalist Manuel da Costa Pinto, who signs the preface to the work. Thanks to this perception, Fahrenheit 451 remains a current narrative, subject to constant studies and reflections.
The book describes a totalitarian government, in an uncertain but near future, that prohibits any book or type of reading, predicting that the people may become educated and rebel against the status quo. Everything is controlled, and people only have knowledge of the facts through television sets installed in their homes or in open-air squares. Reading has ceased to be a means of acquiring critical knowledge and has become as instrumental as the lives of citizens, sufficient only for them to know how to read manuals and operate devices.
Fahrenheit 451 has become a classic not only in literature, but also in cinema. In 1966, director François Truffaut adapted the book and released the film of the same name, starring Oskar Werner and Julie Christie. About the author, Ray Bradbury was born in 1920 in Waukegan, Illinois, USA. From 1941 to 1945, he collaborated on various magazines, contributing short stories and poems. His first collection of stories, Dark Carnival, was published in 1947, and his first novel, The Martian Chronicles, in 1950. Fahrenheit 451, his most famous work, was published in 1953.
The narrative of Fahrenheit 451 is set in a dystopian future where books are banned, and firemen are tasked with burning any they find. The protagonist, Guy Montag, is a fireman who begins to question the world he lives in after meeting a girl named Clarisse, who introduces him to the joy of reading and learning. As Montag delves deeper into the forbidden world of books, he becomes increasingly disillusioned with the society he serves and eventually joins a group of rebels who are trying to preserve the knowledge contained in books.
The novel's themes of censorship, the power of knowledge, and the dangers of conformity and apathy in the face of an authoritarian government have made it a enduring classic of science fiction and a cautionary tale about the consequences of a society that values entertainment and consumption over education and critical thinking. Bradbury's vivid and poetic language, as well as his ability to create a deeply immersive and believable future world, have contributed to the novel's lasting impact and influence on both literature and popular culture.
